Microsoft Word is the standard, so you *may* want to have a copy, even an old one, around to open documents.

Mellel will read Word files. Sometimes Word has problems with Cyrillic (Russian) documents produced on Windows/Vista. Mellel opens them with no problem, preserving the Cyrillic.
Mellel is very well designed and even though new features are added from time to time, it by no means suffers from the "bloat" that plagues Microsoft Word.
Even though Mellel seems to have been designed for scholars, it is perfectly acceptable for business use. RADA LLC uses the product for almost all client communications!
